The Manchester Ship Canal is an inland waterway that is primarily for commercial shipping. The Mersey Estuary near Liverpool brings sea going vessels to join the canal at Eastham Locks at Ellesmere Port. Vessels travel along the canal to Runcorn and Manchester. Further east along the canal at Ellesmere Port there is access to the Shropshire Union Canal. South of Runcorn there is access to the Weaver Navigation via Weston Marsh Lock and just west of Manchester the Pomona Lock joins the Bridgewater Canal. The canal follows the route of the River Irwell that continues on from Salford.
N.B. Pleasure craft may be permitted to use the canal but must not enter the canal without permission from the Manchester Ship Canal Company. This is a busy commercial canal and it used by large ocean going vessels.
